The scholarship is awarded each year in Augut of the Sunday closest to Nellie Alexander's birthday.  Following is the history of the Scholarship:

Nellie Gray Alexander was born August 7, 1900 and passed on June 27, 1994.  She was a member of the Middleburg United Methodist church for 82 years.  she was born in Prince William County, the daughter of John and Kate Gray.

Nellie attended Red Hill School in Catharpin, VA.  She was married to Richard Earl Alexander.  They lived for many years behind what used to the the BP station on the corner of Rt. 50 and The Plains Road, in a house now owned by Mr. & Mrs. Howard Allen.  She and her husband built that house and raised their own children as well as the children  of her divorced brother there.

Nellie had five daugters and one son.  One of the daughters, Ann Alexander married Forrest Lisenbee and for many years resided in Fairfax, VA.  They had a jewelry store and a watch repair busines in Middleburg from 1952-1954.  They had one daughter named Cheryl.  As a child Ann attended church here and when she moved from this area she would return to visit her many friends.  Ann moved to Clearwater Florida when she retired to be closer to her daughter and for the ulterior motive of being close to baseball spring training.  She was an avid baseball fan.

Cheryl spent many summers in Middleburg throughout her school years, staying at Grandma Alexander's.  Cheryl decided after the death of her mother to do something special to honor the memory of both her mother and grandmother who were so active in this church.  She made contact with Richard Kirk and discussed the idea of a scholarhsip program for the youth of our church.  The Administrative Council heartily approved this idea.

Thus, the Nellie Gray Alexander and Ann Alexander Lisenbee Scholarship fund was born.

A scholarship application can be obtained from the office in the church, requests sent by mail to Middleburg United Methodist Church, Nellie Gray Alexander and Ann Alexander Lisenbee Scholarship, P.O. Box 284, Middleburg, VA 20118, or call 540-687-6492.

Alexander/Lisenbee
Scholarship to
Sarah Johnson

'The Memorial Committee welcomes you to their fifth Annual Scholarship Sunday.  In your bulletin you have an insert telling you about the Nellie Alexander/Ann Lisenbee Scholarship.  To summarize, it is given the first Sunday in August by Cheryl Andrews in memory to her Grandmother, Nellie Alexander, a long time member of this Church and her mother Ann Lisenbee.  It is given to a high school graduate in our Church.  If we do not have a high school graduate, it is given to a College Student working on their bachelors or masters degree.

The 2007 recipient has grown up in this church. She attended Loudun County Pulic Schools and graduated from Notre Dame Academy.  She obtained her bachelor's degree from Hollins College.  She is a kindergarten teacher at Banneker Elementary School.  This fall she will be working on her master's degree from Shenandoah University.

She is a dedicatd member of our Church choir and inspires us with her special solos.  She most recently performed in concert doing show tunes to benefit the kitchen fund.  She is beautiful, caring, kind, and has a good sense of humor.

It is my honor on behalf of Cheryl Andrews to present this year's scholarhsip to Sarah Johnson."
